David Horsfield
We are very sad to report the death of David Horsfield who passed away on 18th October.
David started his playing career with Clifton band as a 10 year old back in the 1950's he progressed on to Brighouse and Rastrick, Black Dyke and Versatile Brass.
More recently he helped our B Band out and was a much valued Trustee.
Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Bands failed to impress at the Area Contest

Both our bands took part in the Area contest on 5th and 6th March at St Georges Hall but failed to impress the judges.

Our B Band was first up on Saturday morning and played number 6 out of 12 bands. They played the test piece A Cambrian Suite by Michael Ball well although had a few problems with tuning which was reflected in the remarks.

The senior band were drawn 1st out of 13 bands to play Edward Gregson's piece Essay on Sunday morning and again played very well which was reflected in the judges remarks. All our soloists played brilliant with no errors, but again our interpretation failed to impress the judges.

We will come back again next year to try again.  Thanks to all the hard work of our members and our Musical Director John Clay.

We are looking for Cornet players and a Kit player for our B Band. If you would like to come along and join our team
contact Jane Clay on john366clay@btinternet.com or give me a ring for a chat 07990633320. Rehearsals Friday's and Sunday mornings.

Band wow audiences in Italy

The Clifton & Lightcliffe band has just completed a very successful eight day tour in Italy at Lake Maggiore.  The band were based at the Hotel Regina Palace in Stresa which is a beautiful spot on the Lake side.

During the week they performed three concerts in and around the area to standing ovations from capacity audiences. The first being in the Lake side resort of Ispra which was organised by the local Mayor and the President of the Varese area. The second  was a performance at the top end of Lake Garda in the village of Condino where they have a fantastic musical tradition with their wind bands, we received a wonderful reception with a banquet in the afternoon provided by the local residents after which we had a tour around the locality before our concert in the evening which was very well received.
The final concert was in the Regina Palace Hotel where the band were based.
We are very grateful to Lyndon Stacey a friend of the band who lives and works in Italy who has been invaluable in helping to organise the concerts.

The band is fortunate in that it has toured a number of times over the last 12 years including Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy and an 9 day tour to California playing along side the Pomona Wind band and the Golden State British Brass Band.   Like many other British bands Clifton and Lightcliffe has no commercial funding and has worked very hard over the years to raise the funds to play in these wonderful venues.

We are now looking towards 2017 when we hope to be off on our travels once more.
A full report and pictures will be published shortly.

Senior Band to visit Italy 5th/12th August

The Senior band are off travelling again this time to Lake Maggiore in Italy on Wednesday 5 August for 8 days.  The band will be based at the Regina Palace Hotel in Stresa on the lakeside.  During their stay the band will be entertaining both residents and visitors with four concerts around the area.

The trip has been organised by the band, and we are really grateful to Lyndon Stacey a friend of the band who lives in Italy and has been instrumental in assisting with the setting up of the concerts.

The first concert is on Saturday 8 at Ispra a pretty town across the Lake from Stresa, this concert is being hosted by the Mayor of the town.

On Sunday the band will travel to Condino which is at the northern end of Lake Garda to play as guests of the Corpo Musicale G. Verdi – banda di Condino who have a 500 seater theatre adjacent to their bandroom.

Monday the band will perform in the Regina Palace hotel in Stresa.
Finally on Tuesday the band has been asked to perform at the Milan Expo which is a world trade fair.  This is a huge event running from May to October and is expecting around 20 million visitors over that period.

One of the most famous exhibitions in England was the one held in the Crystal Palace in 1851.

Over the last 10 years the band has travelled to Austria, France, Switzerland and California and is looking forward to their latest trip.

We are delighted to welcome Becky Long back to the senior band as our new Principal Trombone Player.
Becky has just finished her degree at Chichester University.

Due to popular demand we now have a re-run of our CD The Rise of the Phoenix
if you would like a copy please contact the secretary Jane Clay.  CD price £5.00 plus postage and packaging.
